Biography

General:

Dylan Lawrence Gibson (born on the 11th of November 1992) obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music (BAMus) degree at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) in 2014. His focus of study and specialization then was directed towards, Music Education, Music Technology and Classical Guitar (lectured by Abri Jordaan). He also minored in Ancient Culture Studies (BA subject).

In 2018 he completed a Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree at Stellenbosch University where his specialization was dedicated to Musicology, Musicological Criticism, Music Theory and Ethnomusicology (with a minor in Philosophy). It is here (at Stellenbosch University) where Dylan furthered his Classical Guitar studies under Nina Fourie-Gouws and took up Orchestral Percussion as a second instrument (with Suzette Brits). 

He also holds a Master of Music degree in Musicology (focusing on ancient Near-Eastern music theory and notation). Dylan is currently applying for PhD programs dedicated to Musicology and Assyriology.  

Stellenbosch University

Additionally, Dylan has an advanced level "Music Teacher Accreditation" from the University of South Africa (UNISA) which certifies that he is proficient in providing tuition in a Practical Instrument (guitar and drum kit - Pre-Grade 1-8) and Music Theory/Aural Training (Pre-Grade 1-8).

Dylan is also a registered Performing Arts Educator with the South African Council of Educators (SACE).

Composition Background:

Dylan has received compositional training under Professor Hans Roosenschoon at Stellenbosch University (2016) and has participated in composition master classes offered by: 

  • Chia-yu Hsu (Banciao, Taiwan) - 2016.
  • Andile Khumalo (Newcastle, South Africa) - 2016, 2018. 
  • Clare Loveday (Durban, South -Africa)- 2018. 
  • Jürgen Bräuninger (Durban, South Africa) - 2018. 

Awards and Premieres:

In 2018, Dylan was invited to attend the South African Society for Research in Music (SASRIM) composition conference at which his composition “Duodecim Tonus” (for clarinet in Bb and Soprano Saxophone) was premiered. 

Dylan has also received an Honorable mention for his electronic music composition “SPECTRUM-METER” (for electronically manipulated guitar) from the University of Vienna “Sounds of Matter” Composition Competition (2018):

Lecturing/teaching Experience:

Dylan, at present, provides Classical, Contemporary, Jazz and Metal/Pop & Rock guitar tuition at schools and colleges/academies in the Western Cape (South Africa) area.
